The UFC is taking the next step to introduce the “MMA fight” concept in North America, and the promotion has just launched a video featuring former Strikeforce and Bellator MMA fighters Dan Henderson and Conor McGregor to promote the bout.
The promotion has been teasing the event for weeks and Henderson, who’s now retired, is seen in the video talking about how his MMA career has changed since he first stepped foot in the Octagon.
“We’re taking the fight to the gold, to the next level, to a place where there’s no limit, where there’re no excuses,” Henderson said in the five-minute video.
“And that’s what we’re going to do with this event.
We’re going big.
We’ve got a gold belt and we’re trying to do it with a gold mindset.”
Henderson, who is in his second year in the UFC, and McGregor were both on the Bellator roster before signing with the UFC in 2013.
“The only reason I was even able to get on the team was because of a fight,” Henderson told MMAFighting.com.
“I’m a very humble person and I believe in myself.
I’ve been fighting since I was 16.
I’m not here to prove anybody wrong.
I know what I can do, I know how to get in the ring.
But I’m here to make a name for myself.”
Hendingerson, of course, is one of the most successful fighters in MMA history, having won seven UFC titles and has become one of UFC’s most recognizable athletes.
McGregor, who became a household name after winning the UFC lightweight title in 2016, is also one of MMA’s most decorated fighters, having lost his last three fights to eventual UFC welterweight champion Jose Aldo.
The UFC hopes the new promotional push will be enough to earn Henderson a rematch with McGregor in the main event of the UFC’s first card in Las Vegas, but it’ll be a fight McGregor won in 2013 and Henderson won twice during his career, which include victories over Jon Jones and Travis Browne.UFC president Dana White, who has been very vocal about the promotion’s desire to create a new breed of fighters, has hinted that the promotion is looking to bring some of those fighters back to the Octagmweight division for the first time in years.
While Henderson’s win over McGregor in Las.
in 2013 was the first of its kind in the MMA promotion, the UFC has been trying to create the next wave of MMA fighters in the past, including McGregor, but this is the first major promotion that is bringing some of these athletes back to North America.
