Fox News reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has asked FBI Director Robert Mueller to investigate “any and all allegations that President Donald Trump and members of his administration are obstructing justice, defrauding the American people and engaging in a cover-up.”
The Washington Post reports that “a person familiar with the matter said that Pelosi has been lobbying Mueller for months to investigate any and all accusations that Trump and others are obstructor of justice.”
A spokesperson for Pelosi told Fox News that Pelosi “has not spoken to him directly but has been urging him to look into all allegations and make sure the truth is told.”
Fox News says the House speaker also has asked the House Oversight Committee to investigate Trump’s ties to Russia.
In the past, Pelosi has expressed concern about President Trump’s use of private email and a lack of transparency.
In November, the California Democrat also suggested that Trump had been “caught in the act” of the Mueller investigation.
She said the president should step aside “as soon as possible.”
“We have to find out if President Trump committed obstruction of justice,” Pelosi said.
“We don’t want this to turn into a witch hunt.”
The California Democrat added, “I think the only way to do that is to find that President Trump was caught in the Act.”
Pelosi’s spokesperson also told Fox that Pelosi and her allies are also “saying there’s more to come.”
“Pelosi and other members of her leadership team are pushing Mueller to conduct a thorough and complete investigation into these allegations and will continue to do so as long as the investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing.
He has called the congressional investigation a “witch hunt” and said the investigations are being “ridiculous.”
The investigation is “very much political,” the White House spokesperson told Fox.
“It’s all about politics.”
Mueller’s probe into Trump and Russia has grown increasingly politicized since it was launched last year.
Earlier this year, President Trump suggested that he would investigate the president’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn if Mueller wanted to do an investigation into him.
Flynn was fired by Trump in February for lying to the FBI about contacts with the Russian ambassador.
Mueller’s investigation has also taken on a political aspect, with members of the Trump administration reportedly having been investigated by the special counsel’s office and Democrats claiming that Mueller’s office is using the investigation to “foment chaos.”
