ST.
LOUIS, Mo.
— A St. Louis police department officer who stole from a bank was sentenced Tuesday to nearly three years in federal prison.
James Edward Smith, 43, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Missouri.
The plea agreement also includes a mandatory five-year supervised release.
Smith was arrested by federal agents in February 2016 and charged with six counts of wire fraud, three counts of identity theft, two counts of bank wire fraud and one count of identity impersonation.
The charges were based on evidence that Smith, who was on administrative leave, had transferred money from the St. Clair County Bank to the bank account of a woman he believed was his girlfriend.
Prosecutors say Smith transferred more than $400,000 from the bank to his personal account.
